Over the last four years, the University has cut hundreds of staff to save money. Arts and Humanities faculty has shrunk by around half since 2020. The world leading Linguistics department, endorsed by Stephen Fry himself, was obliterated in 2021 due to 'cost saving cuts'. Departments across schools have been merged, leaving more work for less staff. Now, we are set to lose 12% of staff uni wide, and integral courses like Mathematics and Geography are being binned.
In 2022 he was named as the seventh highest earning Vice Chancellor in the United Kingdom, ahead of Edinburgh, West London and Essex. The following year, the University of Huddersfield was ranked 79th in the country in 2024. How does this make sense?
In 2017 it was announced that his salary rose a whopping £146K over five years - that's 67%. In this same period, academic staff reportedly felt their pockets tighten - their pay fell in real terms by 2.8%
Considering the facts, I believe his salary should be decreased.
Bob Cryan is one of the highest paid Vice-chancellors in the UK (with a total compensation of £426 000 as of the financial year of 22/23).
In the current environment of staff redundancies and pay cuts, it would be an exemplary show of leadership for him to voluntarily reduce his salary, showing that everyone is going through these hard times together. Whilst it is understood that his salary is set by an external committee, I'm sure a decrease in pay could be arranged given the circumstances. I believe the Students' Union should lobby the committee that decides Cryan's salary in respect to the supposed financial difficulties our University is facing.

Absolutely! Merging is exactly what happened to my course, even if the University wont admit it being a full merge, and my tutors are certainly feeling the affects of trying to manage 2 Courses and keep on top of their own studies (I.E Doctorates)
It's absolutely disgusting...
And Maths and Geography being scrapped? It's ludicrous

Absolutely agree!! We're paying so much money, and for what? Our lecturers being extremely overworked and our courses cut down? It's absurd! This university needs to treat its staff and students far better than it is doing!!

I was mid way through my PhD application to return to huddersfield. Now my department has been cut and i have friends who are less than a year into their PhD and face uncertainty for the rest of their course. I completely support this.

I lost my absolutely stellar PhD supervisor last year to funding cuts. Now my wonderful new supervisor is under threat. I agree 100%. Bob Cryan's salary is unethical and must be slashed.
