After our Community Officer proposed this idea to Kirklees Council, unfortuantely they are unable to install a new bus shelter.

This is due to following factors:

  • The current bus shelter is a 6 bay enclosed Bus Shelter, which is 5.7m long which equates to approximately 20 foot in length. Under normal operating conditions the shelter at this site would be considered fit for purpose.
  • The shelter cannot be extended and the only way to increase the size of the shelter is to purchase a new longer unit.
  • Cost of a new 8 or 9 bay enclosed bus shelter is approximately £22,000.
  • West Yorkshire Combined Authority has prioritised its budget to maintain bus routes. There is only minimal budget to maintain our current bus shelter stock and no funding to support the replacement of bus shelters.

The bus shelter outside uni is Tiny., and when it rains students get soaked.

Having a bigger shelter would be very beneficial especial at this time when you can only fit 2 people underneath while socially distancing.

Given how many students are stating at Storthes, you would think the shelter would be bigger. It is much bigger at Storthes end so why not here to...?
