Volunteering Week

Volunteering Week this year is on from 22nd to 27th January. If you haven’t volunteered before, either because you have not have time or was unsure where to start, Volunteering Week is the perfect place to start!

 

You can:

  • Make a difference to the lives of others
  • Increase your own confidence and self esteem
  • Meet new people
  • Have fun!

Monday 22nd – Friday 26th

Volunteer’s Fair

Schwann Building

10:15am-2:15pm

Every day this week, local organisations from around West Yorkshire will be in the Uni to talk to you about the volunteering opportunities they have. Find out what you can get out of volunteering, and what help you can give to others.

 

Monday 22nd

22nd – Barriers & Inequalities Training

Meeting Room A, Floor 5, Student Central

12am-2pm

As part of Volunteering Week, we are offering training sessions throughout the week. We start with Barriers & Inequalities. 

The session will cover:

  1. Understanding the concept of education barriers.

  2. Exploring causes of education barriers and how they are interlinked.

  3. Looking at action that can be taken to tackle inequality

Tuesday 23rd

Children’s Activity Game Designing

Meeting Room A, Floor 5, Student Central

11am-3pm

Come over to the SU and express your creative side, where we will be designing activity sheets to give to children at Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. Pens and paper will be provided, and activity books to inspire you.

 

Tuesday 23rd *

Public Speaking Training

R2/11

10:30pm-12:30pm

The Students' Union has designed this public speaking training, after it was requested by our students.

This session will cover:

  1. Demonstrating effective communication techniques
  2. Understanding what good and bad public speaking looks like
  3. Practical application of public speaking methods

Wednesday 24th

Helping the Elderly

Yorkshire Children’s Centre

10:30am-2pm

Come to the Yorkshire Children’s Centre and help out the elderly. Help to set tables, serve tea and coffees, serve ready cooked and portioned food, chat to guests and generally help to support the long-term volunteers who run the sessions.

24th – Committee Training

The Students' Union has designed this Committees training, after it was requested by students, to help you learn extra beneficial skills..

This session will cover:

  1. Preparing for a Meeting
  2. Collating Evidence 
  3. Influencing a Room
  4. Communicating Effectively
  5. Getting a Result

Thursday 25th

Christmas Card Upcycling

Meeting Room A, Floor 5, Student Central

11am-3pm

Bring your unwanted Christmas cards to us to do some upcycling! We will turn your cards into gift tags to give to the Welcome Centre to sell.

 

Thursday 25th

Leadership Negotiating Training

HWG/22, 9:45 to 12:15

HW1/02, 1:45 to 4:15

The Students' Union has designed this negotiating and leadership training, after it was requested by our students.

This session will cover:

  1. An in-depth exercise to highlight the top 10 skills employers are looking for
  2. Analysis of how you interact with people in a team environment
  3. Tricks of the trade in influencing meetings

Charity Work Training

Interested in raising money for charity? Come to this session for information on how to go about it. How to pick a charity, what fundraising activity you can do, what not to do to raise money: Hear all of this from your Communities Officer, Tom!

Students at the Heart of Hud

Huddersfield and Beyond

10am-3pm

A Full day of volunteering around Huddersfield. Give your Saturday to a good cause, and help make a difference in the local community.
