As we come to the end of the academic year we thought we would update you on some of the ideas that have been successfully submitted to the Union this year as part of the ‘Your Big Ideas’ campaign.
We have seen thousands of students engage with the online voting system and we would like to thank you all of you for getting involved. Keep submitting ideas and supporting others next year.
Here's where we're at with all those ideas you've submitted:
This policy was submitted and passed by Union Council. Initial conversations have taken place with the University's registry department and the Exec team are following up on this up with them. A paper will be submitted to the University early next academic year.
This resolution was passed by Union Council and the Students’ Union management have got quotes for having the microwaves installed in the SU. The work will most likely take place over the summer ready for the next academic year. Watch this space.
This resolution was passed by Union Council and initial discussions have occurred with the University, who unfortunately don’t own that section of paving. However, they have agreed to have the discussion on our behalf with the land owners and report back to us.
This resolution was passed by Council but unfortunately due to health and safety issues the University find it unfeasible for us to house a roof garden on the ledge of Floor 5. Vice President Student Activities, Jordan Aird, is following up with the University estates department to look at alternative options.
This resolution was passed by Council and changes have been made to the menu at Campus Kitchen already. Moreover, a member of the catering management team attended May’s meeting of Union Council to get direct feedback from students about what they wanted to see from catering outlets in 2015/16.
This idea unfortunately wasn’t passed by the Union's Management Committee due to the fact that there isn’t the space available to house a prayer room in the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union will continue discussions with the University about improving space for students to pray on campus.
This idea has been a priority for the Students’ Union over the past year and VPs Mike McGougan and Jordan Aird have had several conversations with the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning Tim Thornton about this issue. The University strives to avoid timetabling on a Wednesday afternoon and has drastically reduced students being timetabled during this timeslot. Currently, the University has limited space on campus and this means that some students are timetabled on a Wednesday. We believe this situation will be massively improved with the additional building at Shorehead due to be opened in September 2016.
This idea was approved by the Students’ Union Management Committee and quotes and location for a new trophy cabinet are currently being discussed. We hope to have this in place for the next academic year.
For all other ideas present on the ‘We Are Working On It’ tab, the Exec Officers are working hard to make progress on these across the summer and will update students as and when we achieve success.
If you have any ideas you want to see implemented at the Union, University, or in the community then propose these online and rally the support to get the Exec Officers campaigning on your behalf.
