Quenching the thirst for sustainability

Embarking on a journey towards sustainability, The University of Huddersfield, in collaboration with our esteemed distributor FW3 Group, has revolutionized its approach to hydration. In this blog, we delve deeper into the remarkable case study that details the implementation of environmentally conscious drinking water solutions on campus.

E4 Water Dispenser Installations:

The initial phase of E4 water dispenser installations at the University of Huddersfield marked a significant milestone in the partnership between FW3 Group and the university. Borg & Overström, a key player in this initiative, was invited by FW3 Group to witness firsthand how the installation of hygienic, bottle-less drinking water coolers has transformed the university's approach to refreshment solutions.

Debbie Jones, Business and Finance Assistant at the University of Huddersfield, expressed her delight with the sustainable drinking water dispenser solution. She shared, "Every week I would be ordering up to 15 bottles of water, and I think in this day and age where we're all conscious about plastic, it just seemed absolutely crazy." This sentiment reflects a growing awareness of the environmental impact of single-use plastic within the university community.

Student Satisfaction

Beyond administrative perspectives, the students at the University of Huddersfield have embraced the installation of numerous water dispensers across the campus. This has provided them with convenient access to high-quality drinking water, allowing them to easily refill their bottles and contributing to the reduction of single-use plastic.

Matt Short, a representative of Huddersfield Students' Union, emphasized the importance of hydration for cognitive performance. He shared, "To support learning, it is crucial to stay hydrated because it has been proven to enhance cognitive performance." Short also provided insightful data, stating, "Last year, the campus sold over 40,000 bottles of water and had numerous bottled water coolers operating across campus. Even though many of the bottles are partially made from recycled plastic and can be recycled, this still has a harmful impact on the environment."

Encouraging Sustainable Alternatives:

Matt Short continued by advocating for the switch to a more sustainable alternative. He highlighted the harmful impact of traditional bottled water coolers on the environment and emphasized the benefits of the new water coolers, stating, "By supporting the University to install the new water coolers, we can offer a free alternative that is filtered and chilled, using 80% less energy than the old machines. It's time to make a switch."

A call to action:

The success story at the University of Huddersfield, facilitated by the collaboration between FW3 Group, Borg & Overström, and the advocacy of Matt Short, underscores the importance of finding innovative and sustainable solutions for hydration needs on university campuses. The call to action is clear: "Purchase a University of Huddersfield branded water bottle at the SU Shop and stay hydrated throughout the year". This simple act not only supports sustainability but also contributes to the enhanced well-being and cognitive performance of the university community.
