Hello students of Huddersfield!

My name is Jonathan Stephen and I am your recently elected Education Officer for the academic year ahead. Since the handover from my predecessor Charlotte, I have been attending training events and conferences provided by the National Union of Students as well as preparing myself and the team for some of the amazing projects I have lined up for the upcoming year. “Please tell all!” I hear you say...

Firstly, I am in contact with Barry Sheerman MP, regarding the rise in tuition fees and higher interest rates now placed on student loans. This is a very concerning matter for students and those thinking of entering higher education. Stay tuned for updates as I progress with this, and let me know your thoughts.

One of the main objectives in my manifesto was diversifying the curriculum. This is quite a meaty project that comes with its challenges, but where there are problems there are solutions. We are in the middle of creating a Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic (BAME) Ambassador scheme. This will allow students to speak from a point of authenticity, from bottom-up and top down structures, in tackling diversity in the curriculum and the BAME attainment gap. I am currently inviting students to join in this conversation and if interested, becoming a BAME ambassador. Training will be provided and we will make sure you are fully supported in your role. Additionally, as a Postgraduate Researcher myself, I am aware there are challenges with representation in the Students’ Union and I am here for you to share your thoughts and ideas with, in making this community flourish. Currently, I am exploring ways in which we can unite postgraduate students and enhance their experience whilst studying here at Huddersfield.

I am also passionate about supporting refugees/asylum seekers here at Huddersfield and I am creating initiatives that allow students to form a safe space, to educate, fundraise, and campaign for equal access.

I am here for you all, with a specific focus on empowerment and support. I look forward to meeting you all and working together over the coming year; keep in mind, you are all capable of change to better the student experience. No matter how great or small, the officers are here to listen, support and empower you to make change!
