Guide to being a Fresher

Gearing up for university? Here’s everything you need to know to make it as a Fresher.

Welcome Festival (Freshers’ Week)

A lot of events are held for new students during Welcome Festival so go make the most out of it. The Welcome Fair will be your chance to have a look at what Societies and Sports Clubs are on offer.

They’re also packed with freebies and food vouchers!

Be aware of Freshers’ flu when arriving to university as there is often a wave of colds and bugs that go around the student population. To try avoiding catching Freshers’ flu make sure you stay hydrated and take vitamins.

Familiarise yourself with the area

Familiarise yourself with the area you will be living in for the next 3 years. You should be aware of where are the facilities you will be using during your time here, such as:

  • The Library.
  • The Student Union.
  • Student Services.
  • The laundrette.
  • Canteens.
  • Shops.

Studying on campus

When you’re not in lectures and you are wanting to stay on campus to study. You can go study in the Library, labs or in quiet study spaces which will provide you a comfortable place for independent and group study.

Societies and Events

Huddersfield SU offer several Sports Clubs, Societies and events which are the easiest way for you to get involved as a Fresher. Joining a Society will give you the benefits of making new friends, learning new skills and will allow you to take a break from your studies.

Get social

  • It may seem scary at first to be social but remember everyone is in the same boat. Hang in communal spaces and say hello and chat to other students in your course and lecture, the SU and in the Library.
  • Join online groups for Freshers’, there is a variety of online groups on Facebook that you can join. This will allow you to meet new people and attend events they post in the group.
  • Try out Freshers’ activities out of your comfort zone. During Welcome Festival is a great time try out events which you can bond with new people and invite acquaintances along with you.
