My name is Amelia, I’m a second year student here at the University of Huddersfield, where I’m leading on a project to support disabled students on campus. The project is part of the Inspiring Future Leaders Programme and aims to improve life for disabled students during their time at university.
This Body Can is a campaign that is running during Disability History Month – 22 Nov to 22 Dec 2019 - to empower disabled students to participate in sport.
Sports clubs in the Students’ Union and Team Hud will be hosting sports sessions throughout the month for students to get involved in. You can take part in modified activities like walking football, walking netball, fencing, skateboarding and seated volleyball. Check out the other activities here at This Body Can webpage.
I’m also working with the Students’ Union and Team Hud to develop more accessible services for students on campus. I’ve already succeeded in some great changes. Team Hud is already making some changes to provide accessible changing rooms and also purchase gym equipment that will make the gym more inclusive.
I’m also working with Team Hud to offer a range of gym classes for mixed ability, which will be suitable for disabled students.
Another important part of my project is ensuring equality within teaching and learning at the university. I want to reduce the barriers that disabled students face. I’m working with different departments across the university to develop a more inclusive approach to education.
I’ve been given some really important training and development through the Inspiring Future Leaders Programme which will help me achieve these changes.
