After sending this idea to the Student Panel, the meeting rejected the idea. Despite the groups acknowledging that AI will eventually be integrated within University life, at the current moment in time - it is not right. With ever complex queries coming through the University systems, AI is not in a position to manage these queries effectively. Expert staff members are stil critical to supporting students during their time at Huddersfield. To understand further why the Student panel came to its decision, please read the minutes here: Student Panel Minutes @ Huddersfield Students' Union (huddersfieldsu.co.uk)
I propose that we Implement technology solutions such as chatbots or AI-driven systems within Student Support Services at Huddersfield University; similar to what organisations like Banks have done on their websites. This Use of AI will help users to find information more intuitively, rather than spending time scrolling through a website. We can see this being really helpful for international students to find information more easily. With the University having a Generative AI Steering Group, it would be good to explore these possibilities and improve the student experience.

Personally, I do not like this idea. In the short term it could seem helpful for getting quicker responses to queries, but there have been a fair few cases of AI driven systems providing incorrect information when asked. Not to mention the many copyright infringement problems that run rampant within Generative AI, I do not believe the university employing either type of AI would be beneficial at this time. Instead, I believe looking into making the UI of university websites more intuitive and user friendly would be far more beneficial.
