The SU have had an update from Estates regarding the placement of sanitary bins in Male and Gender Neutral toilets. Once the locations are confirmed we will work on communicating this more widely – perhaps including in the Trans Support guide too.

“With regards to bins in the male toilets, we are awaiting the delivery of the bins in some of the male toilets across campus.  They will be in buildings where we haven’t got toilets for all.”

This idea is on its way to being implemented.

According to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, the Water Industry Act 1991 and the Enviromental Protection act of 1990, it the responsbility of a buisness or a public place to provide bins for the disposal of menstrual hygine products in womens bathrooms, as a failure to do so can lead to pipe blockages or an inconvience in carrying waste home.

The #InWithTheBins campaign launched by Quinn Brown, highlights how trans men also menstruate, and so also require appropriate disposal accomadations for menstrual products, to avoid them having to use the womens facility, where they may be confronted or feel out of place, or carry their waste home which can be highly unpleasant. While paper towel bins are available in some mens facilities, these are not appropriate as they can lead to people being outed, therefore bins should be provided within the cubicles, the same as the womens and gener neutral facilities across campus. While the gender neutral bathrooms can be used by men and have appropriate bins, these are in a limited number of places across campus.

Therefore, sanitary waste disposal bins should be provided in all bathrooms, not just the womens and gender neutral facilities. This would not only help trans men, but also disabled men who use a stoma bag for example, which can be disposed of in public waste, but may feel uncomfortable doing so into the paper towel waste bin.
