During Refreshers' week the Students’ Union held their first ever Summer Jobs Fair. The fair was organised after SU President, Josh Elderfield, pledged to offer students the opportunity to engage with organisations that were offering paid and voluntary work over the summer period. The event was a great success with hundreds of students signing up to volunteer and work with different organisations.
Now, a few months down the line, we’ve heard from Matt Heath, a first year Supply Chain Management student who has secured a job with Myers Group as a result of the fair.
Matt explained: "I had been informed by the University Careers and Employability Service that the Students’ Union were holding a Summer Jobs Fair. I found out Myers Group were looking for students to work in retail outlets over the summer period. When I told them about my degree, they told me there were logistical and transport problems to solve in their roles - a very interesting prospect."
Following Matt’s initial meeting with Myers Group at the fair, he sent the organisation his CV, attended an interview and secured a job. Matt has already met the Myers management team, including the director, learnt more about the organisation and took a tour of some of the facilities.
Matt will start his official first day of work on 5 May where he will undertake duties such as serving in the retail shop as well as taking part in Transport Optimisation Workshops. Myers Group have also encouraged Matt to transfer the skills he develops in this role to his academic studies; inspiring him to begin to collecting and analysing data from the vehicle and retail activities for his own case reports.
Matt concluded: "It’s really exciting to find this opportunity right here on my doorstep. Another reason I am glad I chose to study in Huddersfield."
