This week, 23 to 1 March is National Student Volunteering Week, and we’ve organised loads of events for you to get involved in. Students have already been mucking in with a range of activities, with more to come tomorrow and Sunday.

So what has been happening so far? Here’s a quick run-down:

On Monday, the Students’ Union held a Volunteering Fair showcasing a range of charities from the brokerage system and all their opportunities students can get involved in.

Tuesday marked our Activities in the Community day where different clubs and societies got involved in volunteering across both Calderdale and Kirklees.

Ultimate Frisbee spent the day helping clear and re-stock a local RSPCA shop while the Hindu Society visited a local Age UK centre showcasing Hindu dancing, playing games and befriending elderly individuals. RAG (Raise and Give) society went over to Holmfirth to work with Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice to refurbish one of their shops. Throughout the day, the Anime and Asian Media Society also collected donations across campus for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal.

Wednesday was a chance for student volunteers to get involved in Student-Led Volunteering Project, Knitter Natter. Volunteers made friends with local older people at an Age UK centre in Birstall while knitting egg hats to raise funds for the charity. The Anime and Asian Media Society and Ultimate Frisbee also undertook a second day of volunteering by helping re-stock an RSPCA shop in Calderdale.

Yesterday saw our big donation drive, on Level 4 of Student Central, where lots of student volunteers encouraged people to donate food to local food bank, The Welcome Centre. The day was a great success with staff and students donating 2 trolleys of goods.

And still to come...

Today we will be holding an Inspirational Speaker and Careers Session in Meeting Room A from 11:00. The Inspirational Speaker is Sophia Crawshaw from ‘One Good Turn’ who will be explaining why she got involved in volunteering. You can sign up for the event here: www.huddersfield.su/events/volunteering-inspirational-speaker

The Careers Session will follow by giving advice on how to best apply the skills you’ve gained through volunteering when it comes to writing your CV, applying for a job or going for an interview: www.huddersfield.su/events/volunteering-and-career-planning--2 .

Tomorrow we will be hosting Student’s at the Heart of Hud, a one off volunteering day dedicated to getting students helping charities in the local community. We still have spaces left for Gardening at Ashbrow, DIY with Leonard Cheshire, Fashion and Photography with Oxfam and helping at the Mission’s Community Fair. Sign up here: www.huddersfield.su/events/students-at-the-heart-of-hud--3

HarvestHud will be hosting a taster session on Sunday, get some fresh air and do some exercise!
