With Freshers' done and dusted, we now have 1 week to go until nominations close for the 2015 SU elections. If you’re thinking of standing, or are simply a little confused about the whole thing, here’s everything you need to know...
What are the elections?
Huddersfield Students’ Union is run by students, for students. So of course we need to decide who these students are, right? That’s where the elections come in. Every year you’re given the chance to nominate yourself for a position as a student councilor and speak up on behalf of your fellow students. If you don’t want to run yourself, you can still have your say by voting for who you think should represent you.
What positions are there?
Union Council Members – This is a group of elected students who come together to create policy, make change and campaign for a better student experience. Some have a specific focus (i.e. women’s rep) while others are more broad. These roles are part time with suggested hours of 4 per week.
NUS Delegates – As a delegate, you are expected to attend the NUS annual conference in Brighton from 19 – 21 April and represent Huddersfield SU at this national event.
Why should I stand?
Elected councillors work as part of our Student Council setting the policy and campaigning direction of the Students’ Union for the benefit of students. This is your opportunity to be heard and make a difference to student life.
You’ll also be rewarded for your time and hard work through a £400 honorarium (Union Council) while gaining invaluable skills that are great for your CV. You will also attend the national conference alongside hundreds of other delegates from across the country.
Okay, I’m Interested, how do I stand?
Firstly, make sure you and all your nominators are members of the SU (if not, you can opt in at huddersfield.su/membership). Then, complete the online nomination form at huddersfield.su/elections.
