A record breaking total of £2,530.69 was raised during Raise and Give (RAG) Week thanks to the help and support of sports clubs, societies and local businesses.
RAG Week is dedicated primarily to raising money for the RAG Society's four principle charities – Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, Action Aid, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Fairy Bricks – but clubs and societies can raise funds for any charity that matters to them.
A jam packed week of day and night events got off to a bang at the Students’ Union’s Spring Break party hosted at The Warehouse. Volunteers provided partygoers with everything UV from face painting to glow sticks and raised £100 on the night through sales.
La Petite Bretonne were also on campus during the day and donated 50p per crêpe sold further boosting the total.
On Tuesday our American Football Team – the Hawks – held a dodge ball tournament in the Sports Hall raising over £90 for their chosen charity - Balls to Cancer. The HudEnterprise Society also held a coffee afternoon to network with other students and raise further funds for RAG.
Wednesday saw the fun of the carnival come to the Plaza, with fair ground favourites such as Tin Can Alley, Hook a Duck, candy floss, slush machines and Dixon’s Milk Ices for students to enjoy. RAG Society’s chosen charities were in attendance, each offering fun activities for students on campus. Fairy Bricks had a Lego Subbuteo and Lego Aircraft Challenge, Forget Me Not had a Tombola, Yorkshire Cancer Research challenged students to a buzz wire and Action Aid were offering many opportunities to students to help them with the amazing work they do. The buzz on campus saw an amazing £450 raised in just a few hours.
Santander partnered with RAG Week on Thursday and promised to match the total raised from Rag-e-oke and the sale of slushies. Thanks to the hot weather they flew off the shelves and brought in £310 which will be matched by Santander for a total raised of £620.
The Great Huddersfield Bake Off came to the Students’ Union on Friday and saw three judges from local bakeries, Fudgerific, Pie Eck and I Love Cheesecake, cast their eye over staff and students’ take on Yorkshire themed cupcakes. Entries from HUPDA, the French Society and the newly ratified Huddersfield Cooks Society as well as those submitted by staff were of a very high standard and the judges had a tough time coming to a decision. The winning cupcake was a rhubarb delight closely followed by a Yorkshire pudding themed cupcake, while third place was taken by the Huddersfield Cooks and their Sunday Dinner based cupcake. The cakes were then sold to raise a further £150.
With the week coming to a close the Islamic Society contributed an unbelievable £565.72 on Friday which they wished to donate to Forget Me Not, once again showing their talent for fundraising.
The RAG Society and Students’ Union would like to say thank you to all those that kindly donated money during the week and to the local businesses that helped contributed to making the week such a success.
