Reclaim the Night: Campus Safety Walk

Monday 07-02-2022 - 09:03

Campus Safety Walk

On a quiet Tuesday evening our campus saw the return of the campus safety walk. We were joined by our Campus police officer, members from the estates team, SU officers and staff along with students. The aim of this walk was to highlight problems students have raised regarding lighting and safety. Some of the issues raised by students were:

“Alleyway down the side of Ramsden building where it’s really thin and dark”

“Barbara Hepworth lighting aren’t always turned on”

“Short cut to castings car park & path near castings is very dark”

We arranged the walk because of student feedback about safety and lighting concerns on campus. We were very pleased to be able to identify areas for improvement which in some cases have already been rectified. These included:

Investigations identified that the lighting outside Barbara Hepworth building had indeed been set to switch off at night. This has now been adjusted and so should be on at night.

The lights under the scaffolding outside Ramsden have now been switched on, again any further issues please let us know

The overgrown shrubbery identified at Queens Street has been cut back

The Students’ Union values continuous feedback, it so important to hear students experiences especially regarding safety. If you are walking around campus and see a light out or lighting that isn’t sufficient or an area that doesn’t feel safe, please let us know.

Campus support work really hard to keep campus a safe place but it’s important that you feel safe and secure all the time. To ensure our campus remains a safe place to study, work and socialise the university has a dedicated security team, who work out of the Security Hub in the Harold Wilson Building, Main Entrance.

The Security Hub is open and staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, monitoring CCTV and to provide security advice and assistance. This includes when you are out and about in town in the evening – if you feel unsafe in any way just go the Security Hub and the Security staff will help and advice, including calling a taxi to help you get home.

The Security Hub telephone number: 01484 472220 (internal university phones extension 2220)

The Security Hub is also the place to:

Report lights out on Campus – Security will let the campus maintenance team know.

Report any other safety or security concerns you have – Security will take immediate action when they can and will ensure concerns are reported to the appropriate managers within the University.

The Students’ Union is always looking for students to get involved in campaigns they are passionate about. If safety is something you feel strongly about why not form a group and bring back the reclaim the night campaign.
