Hey everyone,

So, Fresher’s 2016 is officially over (cries and sobs) and it was a blast! We hope the post- fresher blues aren’t kicking in too much and that you’ve settled into life at Huddersfield.

One thing that is certainly not over? Respect! Over the summer the Students’ Union have been working closely with the University to put respect firmly back on the agenda.

The University have a document deep in the student’s handbook of regulations with a code of conduct. You’re probably nodding off already (Zzz) so we’ll break it down for you. It’s all about respecting one another and ourselves. We’re all here to learn, seek and share our unique experiences and that’s what’s so great about student life.

These things are a big no-no here at Huddersfield University:

  • Racial and sexual harassment on campus, which is unwanted sexual, judgemental, offensive and/or racial comments about a person’s body, practices and preferences, culture, clothing or sexual orientation.
  • Non-verbal practices like catcalling, wolf-whistling and making offensive noises can be unpleasant and offensive. Where some people may consider this ‘banter,’ others may not share this viewpoint.

The key message is, we all have different perspectives and may not see things the same way.

With the famous words of Aretha Franklin, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, take care! If you need a little support, or have any questions about respect at University, then get in contact with myself, your Wellbeing Officer Lianne (su.equalities@hud.ac.uk)

Have a good week,

Lianne
