Hello everyone,

November Elections are right around the corner and we're looking for delegates who will represent University of Huddersfield students at the National Union of Students (NUS) National Conference and other NUS Conferences coming in 2018. Nominations are now open until the 12th of November, with voting open between the 20th and 22nd of November.

NUS National Conference

One of the positions we’re electing is NUS National Conference delegate. National Union of Students Conference 2018 will be held in Glasgow, giving you a chance to enjoy some Scottish culture. Some of you are probably wondering “what is the NUS?” Well, NUS represents every student across the UK, and National Conference is the biggest event on the NUS democratic calendar.

If you are interested in making change and want to be involved in the next generation of changes that will affect current and future students in the UK, then this is the event for you! You will be a part of a team, debating student issues and making a positive difference to society.

At National Conference, you’ll get to vote on policy and the leadership of the student movement. The NUS have done loads to fight for social justice and student rights, some of their achievements include:

  • Founding the popular student insurance provider, Endsleigh, in 1965
  • Negotiating with British Rail to create the Student Railcard in 1974
  • Securing exemption from Council Tax for all full-time students in 1992

We are electing 4 delegates (2 of which must be women due to NUS rules) to this Conference, which is going to be in Glasgow from 27th - 29th March.

NUS Liberation Conferences

We’re also electing delegates to NUS’ Liberation conferences. We’re electing one delegate to each of these conferences. The delegate will get to vote for the new Officer(s) and committee for each campaign, and vote on motions submitted to each conference. Here are the dates of each conference:

  • 6th March – Trans Conference
  • 7th-8th March – LGBT+ Conference
  • 10th-12th April – Disabled Students’ Conference
  • 1st-3rd May – Women Students’ Conference
  • 12th-13th May – Black Students’ Summer Conference

Not only do we want our delegates to attend the conference, but we also want to empower all of our Liberation conferences delegates to run campaigns on campus, and speak up for the students they represent.

NUS International Students Conference delegate

We’re also electing one delegate to the International Students Conference. This delegate will attend the conference, held on 27th February, and vote on the new International Students Officer, committee, and any policy for the campaign.

If you think you'd be perfect for one of the positions then you can nominate yourself here.

If you’ve got an idea that you think NUS should act on then please get in touch with the SU President Wael Alenezi via su.president@hud.ac.uk, or Democracy Coordinator Freya at f.govus@hud.ac.uk. Alternatively, just come up to the Students’ Union Front Desk (Student Central, Floor 5.)
