Officer Blog: Elections are Coming

Hi folks, it’s that time of year again, you’ll soon start seeing posters plastered on every surface imaginable and people dressed in yellow will be asking for your vote! Every year we elect five Student Officers, it is their job to run the Students’ Union, represent you and most importantly, help make student life better.

This is where you come in, we need your help to decide the new Officer Team for 2018-19. With voting opening at 10am Monday 12^th and closing 4pm 14^th of Feb; this is the time to have your say on who’ll best represent you. We have different candidates running for each position: SU President, Education Officer, Equalities Officer, Communities Officer and Activities Officer. The candidates all run separately, so you’re voting for the individuals you want not groups.

It is really important to take part in the Elections, the Officers you elect will make changes to improve your university experience for the next academic year - and beyond. Officers are responsible for sorts of things; from making changes on your academic issues, to working on the fun stuff like Freshers’ and Varsity. You will have a chance to check candidate’s profiles and ask questions at the Candidate Question Times which run all this week, so you know who you’re voting for. Those elected will represent you and all students at the University of Huddersfield; they’ll sit on University committees, making sure that decisions made are right for students.

If you’ve not experienced one before, Election weeks are so much fun! All 19 Candidates, their campaigners and SU Staff spend three days out all over campus, across all seven schools, to talk to you about all things elections. There will be two Voting Stations, one on University Square and one outside the Library where staff (dressed in pink t-shirts) will be on hand to answer questions and help you vote, you can even check out voter turnout in your school by using our Elections Dashboard.

The week ends with Results Night at Zetland, Thursday 15^th from 6pm. All the Candidates come together and next years’ Officer Team is revealed. If you’re there, you’ll get to find out who will be leading the SU for the next academic year but don’t worry if you can’t make it, it gets live coverage on our social media channels too – follow #HudVotes to stay up-to-date with the action and join in!
