When I was a student here I didn’t get involved much with the Students’ Union but I could see all of the good services that they offer, like the Advice Centre, Sports Clubs, Societies, HudLets and the many events they run each term. I thought that if elected, I could be a link between international students and the SU, encouraging them to take a more active role in the Students’ Union and use the services more.
I knew that I wanted to run for President, being an international student didn’t put me off! I had lots of experience working with international societies through the International Office, so I thought why not run! I would like to encourage other international students to run as I feel that the experiences I have gained from my role as President have been different to those learned from my degree. I have learned to be more organised and now feel more prepared for the world of work. I was well supported by the staff at the Students’ Union while I was finding my feet – so don’t get put off from nominating if you don’t have lots of experience!
I didn’t realise quite how much responsibility would be on me! It is my job to represent and campaign for all students here at the University of Huddersfield, (this does involve attending a lot of meetings!). I also didn’t realise that I would be a Trustee of the Students’ Union, I need to be able to help decide what is good for the organisation but what is also good for students now and in the future. I have to always be thinking long term even though my position is just for one year.
I really enjoy being President, for me the fun bit is talking to students outside of the Office - it’s almost like being a student for an extra year but without the pressure of studies! I often find that students will come and talk to me in person before using our services, it’s great to be able to help.
As President, I am a link between the University and Students, both ways. I see things that students don’t see, and with all the facts, I understand the decisions that are taken by the University. It is my job to help the student body understand that the University always has their best interests in mind. I am also able to help the University understand how students feel, working together with the SU and University we help make student life better.
