When running in Elections 2017, I had no idea what this job role would actually entail – it’s gone on to be the most amazing and fulfilling experience I’ve ever had.

Since being elected, I’ve sat on numerous high-level committees throughout the Students’ Union and the University itself, sat on the SU Board of Trustees and helped direct the strategic future of the organisation – as well as putting together some astounding events and activities such as Freshers’ Festival 2017, BUCS sport and a brand new participation scheme.

The skills that you gain from a role like this are invaluable, one minute you can be leading a sexual health campaign dressed as a giant condom then the next sitting on University level disciplinary panels.

The amount of knowledge that you can draw from the amazing individuals that work within the office is great, but when you’re out and about visiting other Students’ Unions and attending conferences it gives you the chance to network and make contacts that can benefit you throughout the year.

Individually, this role has built a confidence in me that I never knew I had – from spending time with the University Senior Management team to speaking in front of a packed out St. Paul’s Hall during graduations, I’ve done things I never thought I would.

Our mission statement at the SU is to Make Student Life Better, and working here gives you the opportunity to make that happen.

It takes an enormous amount of courage to put yourself out there and campaign in an election but I would urge absolutely anybody that has even considering doing this to take the leap – I promise you won’t regret it!
