The Huddersfield Skiing and Snowboarding Society (HUSSI) are set to make their debut in the British Universities Indoor Series Championships (BUiSC) Nationals where they’ll compete against the best snowsports athletes from across the country.

Considered the pinnacle of indoor snowsports competitions in the UK, BUiSC is being held at SnoZone, Castleford, this Wednesday, giving our team home advantage.

The club secured qualification for the finals through BUiSC North where the club had a record 13 boarders and skiers taking part with many of them making it to the final races of the day and the Snowboarding Dual Team securing a place in the nationals.

Heading to BUiSC tomorrow are:

Steven Helliwell – Ski Slalom

Arnas Kiškys, Kieran James Crow, Andy Chalmers – Snowboard Slalom & Snowboard Duels

Matthew Ormerod – Snowboard Duels

Club social secretary, Adam Lamping, said: “HUSSI has had an incredible year so far and it has only just begun!

“May the fancy dress, fundraising, partying and skiing continue! And of course a massive thank you goes out to every single one of our amazing members!”

Who are HUSSI?

HUSSI are the University of Huddersfield Skiing and Snowboarding Society and are dedicated to giving anyone the chance to try snow sports regardless of their abilities and previous experience. With their multiple trips to local snow domes and annual skiing holiday they’ve attracted 75 students across all years, creating one of the largest activity groups on campus.

This year’s holiday to Val Thorens (French Alps) included a 28 hour coach journey each way, 70 students, no injuries and even getting a team in the Red Bull Games.

A club spokesman said of the trip: “This all added up to a trip of a lifetime for many. It was the biggest trip in seven years and the committee couldn’t be happier with how well it went.

“Based on this success, the next trip has already been planned and HUSSI will be going back to France but this time hitting Les Arcs in Easter time.”

HUSSI also gives their more experienced members the chance to compete in British Universities Dry Slopes (BUDS) as well as British Universities Indoor Series Championships (BUiSC).

In addition the club has done extremely well when it comes to securing external funding. They can proudly say they are one of only two universities in England that were offered funding from Snowsports England, a national governing body for snowsports.

This entitled the club to offer heavily discounted lessons to beginner skiers and snowboarders. The funding is set to continue into the future meaning HUSSI can play a big part in getting people on to the slopes.
