The National Union of Students (NUS) are organising a student strike as part of their New Vision of Education Campaign in central London on Wednesday 2nd March 2022. We are bringing a coach full of students to take part in this!
So, why do we need to strike and what is the ‘New Vision’?
It is time to start over and transform higher education into institutions which support every individual to thrive and be at the centre of each decision made by universities. We are striking to demand the government listens to students when we ask for education to be:
Fully-funded: higher and further education to be funded by governments – free at the point of use for students – with proper pay, pensions and working conditions for staff across education and beyond.
Accessible: creating safe and inclusive spaces - built for students here and now and uprooting disablism in our education.
Life-long: there to support us from cradle to grave – think less restrictive, more fluid & flexible.
Democratised: giving students more power and agency over our own learning.
What is the strike and how do we take part?
Strikes have historically proved effective in creating change through creating a strong community of individuals who are passionate about creating change. Traditionally, ‘strikes’ have been not turning up to work or education and perhaps going on a march to reinforce your messaging. However, this strike will be a little different… NUS are holding a ‘teach-in’ for people, like yourself, to celebrate the collective power of this movements. There will be a strong focus on empowerment and creativity with inspiring performances, entertainment, speeches, workshops and high positive energy.
For those who are unable to travel to London with us, NUS will also be hosting a ‘digital strike’ so you won’t miss out on being able to collaborate, network and share ideas with others from around the country!
