This is a formal statement to announce that Bradford Students’ Union have successfully appealed the final score of Mixed Athletics due to a technicality.

The result means the point for this fixture has been awarded to Bradford and with it the Varsity Cup.

Vice President Student Activities, Jordan Aird, said: “I’m absolutely devastated that this has happened. It’s a shocking way to lose the cup; I’m lost for words that they’ve contested the result on such a small detail.”

Bradford challenged the result of the steeplechase after measuring the height of the hurdles used during the race. According to Bye-Law 9.1.6 of the Varsity Charter which references the conduct of Athletics Meets it states: “With reference to the Steeplechase – the hurdles used during a men’s race must be .914 metres high while a women’s race must feature hurdles of a height of .762 metres.”

It is these two heights that were contested and subsequently proven to have been incorrect on the day after the women’s hurdles were used in the men’s race in a mix-up by race officials.

The Students’ Union would like to put on record its regret at the error and would like to congratulate the new Varsity champions Bradford.
