There‘s not long left for you to register to vote in the General Election and we want to make sure that when it comes to voting you save enough time to look at each party’s manifesto and decide which candidate you want to see running the country for the next five years.
The deadline to register is Monday 20 April (next week!) and you can register online in just a few minutes.
Thankfully most parties have dedicated a lot of time to writing educational policies, which look into making student life more affordable, making them more employable and also more prosperous in the future.
There are a lot of things that you should ask yourselves as students before voting and trust me, if you vote, things will change. When it comes to voting you might ask yourself: why should I vote? The best thing that you can do is to think about issues that really matter to you. These are some of the areas of issues that Huddersfield students put forward during our National Voter Registration Week:
As you can see there is so much that students are already talking about, so much that needs to be fixed in the UK, and all it takes is your vote. If you need some “election inspiration”, watch this video of a debate where students like yourselves, questioned national politics leaders face to face. It’s absolutely worth a watch.
Back in November we collected over 200 ideas from students and these formed the Huddersfield Student Manifesto. This was done to ensure that education is one the prime political focuses and that the student voice will not be neglected at this year’s elections. We sent the Student Manifesto to Huddersfield constituency candidates, who are running in the General Election, as they really need to hear it from the voice of 20,000 students who dominate the campus of the University of Huddersfield.
Is there anything else that you think has not been mentioned and that should be worked on by your Government? Is there anything about your country that you think should improve? Things can change if we actually do something about it!
Well, to ensure that the right people get elected, you should register to vote and exercise your right to pick the next leaders of the Government.
Your Students’ Union will host a General Election question time, where each candidate from the Huddersfield constituency will be answering questions asked by students. I will be hosting the debate alongside the SU President, Josh Elderfield, and we’ll also be covering the event live on our social media channels. Feel free to tweet @huddersfieldSU with your questions. This is your chance to ask your questions to politicians standing in your area. By attending the debate we will make voting worthwhile and we will prepare you with a very well rounded debate which will give you a clearer idea of what candidate suits your views best.
The General Election Question Time will take place on Tuesday 21 April at 17:30 in the Students’ Union (Floor 5, Student Central) and we would love to see you there. Feel free to submit a question or even better, head down to make sure that your voice is heard straight away.
There is a great bunch of young people like you who have already registered and started to take action by raising questions to the leaders of the UK Government on issues which have affected thousands of students, and need to be taken into consideration. Young people have not always been considered as valuable voices in the UK, so if you want to see positive change, take action now and register to vote.
At Huddersfield Students’ Union we have invested a lot into making sure that students are registered to vote, and as a reward for signing up we have organised a HUGE Spring Break Party that will blow your mind. The whole event is absolutely free, yes FREE! So what are you waiting for? Get on the SU’s Spring Break page, read all the info, register to vote and get your FREE ticket today. There's a very limited number available so make sure you don't miss out.
See you all there :)
