Last week really was a huge one for our students – we accepted a grand total of 750 ideas from nearly 350 people! In the spirit of #YourBigIdeas, you could say we really have opened up our ears (more than usual) here in the Students’ Union 👂
The Exec team have all been out all over campus speaking to anybody and everybody about what they would like to see changed – even coming into your ‘long-winded’ and ‘boring’ lectures to chat about Your Big Ideas!
We had students tweeting in using the hashtag #YourBigIdeas, and others putting their ideas straight onto the SU website... I do love comms! We’ve also had some lovely students taking the time and trouble to hand in their big idea cards to the SU front desk.
Our wonderful data monkeys in the office managed to gather some sexy stats for all of the idea submissions too. Here’s a breakdown of the categories of which most of the students were telling us about:
Food/Catering – 36%
Course Specific – 21%
Events/Activities – 17%
Library – 14%
Parking – 10%
Here are some of the best bits from last week...
Some of the ‘edgiest’ ideas that we got from students included llamas to carry students’ bags around campus, a request for a date with VP Activities Jordan Aird, and an invitation to the SU President Michael McGougan to have a Chicken Parmo meal with him! Unfortunately we won’t be able to get any llamas on to campus, but VP Wellbeing & Equalities Alysia Ford has kindly volunteered herself to carry students’ bags for the rest of the academic year. How nice of her!
On the Monday, two students complained that their lecture room was too cold, so we brought them a few blankets to keep warm!
One student asked for a pair of free Beyonce tickets... unfortunately we couldn’t fulfil that request, but we did get a full hour of non-stop Beyonce on Radio Hud on that afternoon. Pretty much the same thing, right?
Another student asked for non-dairy milk options in the SU shop, and guess what we did? We started stocking it.
I’ve got to say – this week has really shown us all how easily we can make change happen, and hopefully this will empower more students to speak up about their ideas in future! As always, you can submit your own ideas at huddersfield.su/yourbigideas
So, one word to sum up this week? (Ready for George’s cheese?!)
Success 👊
Big love.
