Hi! I’m Jody Denness, your LGBT Representative and VP Male Welfare Representative in the Huddersfield LGBTQ Society, and I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to update you on what I’ve been working on.
February is LGBT History Month!
Celebrated across the United Kingdom, it is a month that focuses on promoting equality, raising awareness and visibility of the national LGBTQ community, all the while working to improve safety and welfare channels for those within it.
This year, we are very proud to be among the many universities who are celebrating the lives and achievements of historical LGBTQ figures such as Isaac Newton and Alan Turing, as well as helping to pave the way for a brighter and more diverse future for the gender and/or sexual minority (GSM) community.
The LGBTQ society is working closely with the Students’ Union to organise a range of fun, social events throughout the month to bring the community together for Fabulous February.
We have lots of stuff in the pipeline, and it all kicks off on Tuesday 10 with an LGBTQ coffee morning between 11:00 and 13:00, followed by the first in a series of LGBTQ-related film screenings starting at 17:00, both upstairs in the SU.
Last but not least, don’t forget the LGBTQ society socials at 20:00 in Revolution every Wednesday evening!
I’m going to be filling you in each week on everything we have planned, and talking about a few important figures and dates in LGBT history. I’m also hoping to organise some trips to events hosted by other universities in the Yorkshire Equality & Diversity Network.
If you have any queries, feel free to drop me a line or find me on Facebook. I hope you have a wonderful February, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!
