Christmas gift ideas on a budget

It’s that time of year again where you've left your shopping last minute and all your money has gone on takeaways and a black Friday shopping spree. You might have even been lucky enough to bag the 12p PRETTYLITTLETHING sale. Your student loan is coming to an end and many of you may even be in your overdrafts. Here at the SU we know exactly how you feel so here is an article that will help you make some gifts on a budget. You never know, you might already have some of the bits at home which will make it that much simpler! This article will show guid you through making a couple gift idea ranging from a coupon book and even a vegan cookie recipe because who does not love to indulge in some sweet treat on Christmas.  

Vegan Jammy Dodgers

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (85g) plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2.5 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 1.5 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/4 tsp extract

For the jam filling

  • Jam of your choosing

Method:

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan assisted)/ 350°F

2. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

3. Pour in the coconut oil, milk of your choice, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Mix to form a dough.

4. Roll out the dough on a well-floured surface, then using a cookie cutter, cut out the cookies and arrange on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

5. Bake for 10-12 minute, then leave to cool completely.

6. Fill your cookies with a layer jam and enjoy!

Coupon Book

Materials:

  • Card
  • Scissors
  • Hole puncher
  • Ruler
  • Pens or markers
  • Ribbon

Steps:

1. Cut the card to make your coupons. It's up to you how big or how small your coupons are.

2. Create a front cover page on 1 of your coupons. This coupon will be placed at the front of the coupon book and will tell the person you give the book to exactly what it is. 

3. Draw a design on your coupons.

4. Write out the tasks on the coupons e.g.  

You'll do their laundry
You'll bring them breakfast in bed
You'll clean the house
You'll wash up after dinner for a week
You'll take the dog walking for a month


5. Punch a hole in the top left corner of all of the coupons and Thread string, twine, or a ribbon through all of the coupons.

6. Present the book to the person you made it for.
