Pulling off the annual Christmas get-together before you and your mates head home is one of the great challenges of university life. Whether it's setting the table and trying to feed everyone for under £20, or making sure nobody dies from food poisoning – it might seem harder than most of your assignments at times!

Being the experienced student-savvy types that we are, we've prepared this list of 10 things that (usually) happen at every student Christmas dinner to give you a heads up.

1. Like every student gathering, one person always gets far too drunk.

2. Someone’s regional Christmas ‘tradition’ will be laughed at and/or frowned upon. “You do WHAT with WHAT?”.

3. There’s a tussle for the role of head chef. You grumble at the time, but then the food comes out great so you can’t be mad.

4. Someone forgets one vital ingredient and ends up running to the shop last-minute.

5. There is alcohol in EVERYTHING. Even the potatoes.

6. There aren’t enough plates/cutlery, so you end up eating out of a mug.

7. And the same with chairs.

8. Cracker pulling gets very violent, very fast. Arms may get broken, hair may get pulled.

9. Your kitchen will never be the same – whether it’s stains on the carpet or weeks of washing up to do.

10. The food is never as good as your mum’s cooking, but you can be proud cause you made it yourselves!
